  Genpets Bioengineered Buddy
genpetsI saw a story over at artful visions about these weird little cute creatures called Gen Pets. They're supposedly living toys that you have to care for.
Everything looks very believable as there's a website with plenty of information about Genpets and what they do. I was almost tempted to purchase one (the website says they are coming soon), but I looked into it a bit more and found that they're the work of an artist.
They remind me very much of the weird works by the Australian artist Patricia Piccinini, but they're actually by the Canadian artist Adam Brandejs. He has also made a strange flesh shoe!
Anyway, he is actually trying to say something about bioengineering and how the technology could be used in the future..
The artist says on his website "I don’t ever want to be confused for as a crazy activist, nor do I want to appear as endorsing this technology. Bioengineering could lead to medical breakthroughs that save lives, but will it? This is more a critique of corporate ethics than of technological ethics."

While the Genpets hang on the store shelves they are in a form of hibernation. Each Genpet™ package has a special nutrient feeding tube attached to it, supplying our specially formulated mix and keeping them healthy and asleep.

Comments:
How fascinatingly wierd. The shoe is horrible in a fascinatingly wierd way, as are patricia piccinini's family of creatures.
Not sure if my husband could handle having a gen pet around the house, he has a hard enough time with some of my stuff LOL!
What a statement about biotechnology though!!!!!

I found the shoe to be a disturbing display. The gen pets are interesting, though.

Yeah, that shoe is disgusting. But that didn't stop me from wanting to look more.

It also says the Genpets are available to buy from the artist, but they're not living of course. $800 for the ones that don't move and $1200 for an animatronic one.

Almost tempting..

whoa.. those things are creepy..

so their not alive

these things are just wrong... they're like genetically enhanced fur-real pets without the fur...

and they're ugly as all heck!

I have a few questions for you...
#1 Are they alive?
#2 Why are they so expensive for something that doesn't move or do anything?
#3 When do they come out in Australia?, because i haven't seen them around anywhere, unless i'm not lokking hard enough, but it would be pretty hard to miss
#4 If they have come out in australia, what shops are they in
#5 Why can't i find them on Ebay?
#6 Can you get me a cheaper price... a 12 y/o can't afford $1200

That's about it thank you for your time you can E-mail the reply to me at AsH-x_x@hotmail.com address it to ash or send it to grannyrobyn@hotmail.com ... that's my nan... please reply...please...

Theyre not a real product for sale Ashleigh, they're just made to look that way by the artist.

According to the website, theyre coming to Australia in August, to the Powerhouse Museum..
