  MTV Art Battles
mtv art battleMTV has made the process of painting look cool, with their "Art Battles" show. Here's what it is..

"Art Battles is a live-art competition where artists create work side- by-side in front of a live audience. For six years Art Battles have been a platform for talented artists to showcase their skills in and around NYC in a most unique setting and under tremendous pressure to perform. There's no time to sleep on your ideas, no chance to mull the nuance of each brush stroke. No, with Art Battles, time is as much of the essence as is inspiration and talent." MTV

There's a video of it online here and you can vote for your favorite artist here. I voted for Ben Angotti.

It's everything that being an artist isn't, but that's fine with me. It's hard to make artists look interesting as creating a painting isn't much of a spectator sport. It's fun for the artist creating the work, but I doubt an artist would ever sell many tickets if he began painting on stage.

Update: Here's the Art Battles website online.

Ben from Art Battles also had this to say about the events..
"We have been and will continue to do many shows around the NYC area. The purpose is two-fold to me to challenge the artist by taking them out of the comfort of their studios, and put them on stage in competition. Secondly it is to give emerging artists some needed exposure. The shows are far more entertaining than you might imagine, with notable MC's, musicians and street performers to supplement the artists painting live."

Art is in the eye of the beholder :)

Rolf Harris seemed to pull it off. Oh I know arg! but when I was little I LOVED his show. He would tell a story as he painted on a wall.

I think it is fun, energetic, and just another way to showcase art.

Maybe, but I remember an artist at an Art College painting nudes with brushes loaded with paint. The brushes were attached to power tools and he was directly applying paint to the nudes. The establishment were not that impressed, but it was a good spectator sport.

You read my mind Jafabrit.

Rolf Harris currently hosts a show in the U.K. called 'Star Portraits' where three portrait artists paint a celebrity. The celebrity then gets to choose which one they keep.

It's a bit of fun, but also interesting to see different painting styles/processes, see link below:

I asked one of the artists on Star Portraits (Belinda Eaton)a few questions a while back.

I'm waiting for a a reality show for artists. Is there such a thing already? They have reality shows for everything else, so why not artists?

Ohhh my gosh! That is sooo freakin' kewl! I would jump at that chance to be on a reality show for artist's and I'm sure that alot of other artist's as well would do the same. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Interesting interview, thanks for the archive link.

I think t.v. producers could easily have an artist reality t.v. show: Put ten artists in a house, see who sells the most artwork..bit like having a studio.

Perhaps they could work out any artistic differences by duelling with paintbrushes, ok I'm just being random now.

Looking for art I found your blog.

Interesting your blog... :-)

I definitely agree that it doesn't feel like art. The contestants all look like they have sold out...or am I romanticizing art and not being realistic? I mean, painting is tough and I would jump at the chance to make some money, but the video just looks so corporate.

those storms here in Sydney were CRAZY but the photos are strangely beautiful
