Andy Warhol Perfume
Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez and Miss Piggy all have a perfume of their own. Now Andy Warhol will have a celebrity perfume too, when the New York fragrance makers at Bond no.9 release a perfume called "Silver Factory" in December.
It's a collaboration between the Andy Warhol Foundation and Bond no.9 (known for making New York neighborhood scents). This is the first of a series of Andy Warhol inspired perfumes that are being produced.
I don't know much about perfume, but it smells good to me. It's for guys and girls, which seems appropriate for someone like Mr. Warhol.
Bond no.9 say.. "We conceived of Silver Factory as a smooth, smoky, spicy blend of interlacing incense (a key scent of the sixties), wood resin, and syrupy, seductive amber. But just to complicate things, we gave it a heart of jasmine, iris, and violet.. a scent that Warhol was especially fond of. These slightly dissonant florals combine to evoke a metallic effect.. that of warmed-up, molten silver. And then, for the merest hint of coolness, we threw in a handful of cedarwood."
The perfume bottle design is inspired by a Campbells soup can by Andy Warhol.
Update: A new Andy Warhol Fragrance has been released by the New York perfume maker Bond No.9.

With any other artist I'd be thinking that having a perfume was a bit irritating. But since Warhol's artwork was partly about commercialism, he probably would have done it himself if he were alive.
Perhaps Hirst will release a formaldehyde smelling perfume called 'the impossibility of smelling good in the mind of someone sniffing' or something.

Yeah, the Andy Warhol name could sell anything. Andy Warhol loans or a Warhol credit card would be funny.
He was selling TDK video tapes in Japanese on this YouTube video.
Would be funny if a box of Damien Hirst perfume turned up on your front door in a few months Helly (using your name).
Hirst and Jeff Koons are probably the only other two artists that could pull off a perfume without looking too tacky.

The bottle reminded me of 4711 (I think its the colours). I can't say I like the bottle and design at all.

Andy Warhol is like Re Mida,whatever he touches it becomes gold!
I think that it would be very funny if the parfum smells bad!It would conveying the same provocative message of Piero Manzoni's 'Merde d'artiste'..a dry critic against who is minded to buy everything provided that it is signed!

I hate to say it but that bottle looks extremely tacky. No doubt it will still sell like hot cakes though.
its all about money with this greedy foundation. warhol would have loved it though. shame that the money just goes to fund the expensive lifestyles of the foundation and their lawyers.

For those of you old enough to have been in the same room with Andy, the association with a fragrance might seem a bit odd. But licensing provides cash, and the Foundation has surely become associated with cash. As the owner of a very significant inventory of Warhol works, and holder of the authentication “key”, the Foundation played a very significant, at times controversial, role in the contemporary market for Warhol works. But now, with the foundation’s inventory very significantly diminished by the rapid rate at which it has been selling works in the past several years, fragrance may prove to be the new “pop” for the foundation.
From the point of view of Bond 9 and its brilliant creator, Laurice Rahme, the marriage is very clever. Warhol is hot, it’s the party season, and most people associate the Pittsburgh born artist with New York City. People seem to be willing to pay big bucks for anything bearing Warhol’s name, so why not a luxury, high priced fragrance?
The more interesting question is “what does this marriage presage for the Warhol art market? The foundation played a very active role in the market for Warhol works: it sold works, mostly to dealers and top tier collectors, authenticated works, and influenced the channels of distribution, by decreeing who could buy directly from the foundation and in some cases who could buy from those who bought from the foundation. For a time, hardly any Warhol work of significance could change hands without some Foundation involvement.
Any reduction of the Foundation’s role will likely benefit the art market, the dealer community and collectors because the market will behave more freely and competitively. The Warhol market might even acknowledge the importance of scholarship and curatorial insight. Even collectors like Jose Mugrabi, who claims to own in excess of 800 original Warhols, don’t combine their ownership with the power to authenticate works. Consequently, these two sources of power will be diffused among more players.
Many art world denizens have long regarded the Warhol Foundation to be far more concerned with the commerce in art than with Warhol’s place in art history. Now that the Foundation has partnered in the launch of a Warhol fragrance, one can say that they have indeed learned something from Andy and have taken his commercialism to heart. Hopefully, the void created by the Foundation’s now open commercial focus will be filled by serious art scholars, critics, and collectors so that we can all get a more balanced appraisal of Warhol, the artist.

How come is it the first one that has been inspired by him? A few years ago there were even popular perfumes called Andy Warhol by Andy Warhol (both for men and women) and also Marylin by Andy Warhol... Does anyone know if the AW Foundation was behind those as well?
