  Women Impressionists in San Francisco
American Impressionist Painter Mary CassattI have had complaints that I don't mention female artists enough on Art News Blog, so this exhibition should help with my quota of women artist posts for the month. I usually listen to complaints or constructive criticism, but strange people that think the world revolves around them or extremists that try and push their distorted way of thinking onto others don't get much of my time.

If the person took the time to actually look at the blog for any longer than 2 minutes they would see that the front page at the moment has a female artist working with spam, a female British artist (being sued), an Australian woman artist giving prints away, and some female artists dressing trees. If I do anymore posts on women artists this will turn into a feminist blog, which would be kind of strange as I'm male.

I really don't care if a post is about a male artist or a female artist and I never will care, ever!. All the complaint made me think about was ignoring all news stories that mention female artists, but that would make me just as deluded as the complainer, so I chose to ignore/delete the complaint.

Back to the point of this post (sorry about the rant), an exhibition called "Women Impressionists: Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzalès, Marie Bracquemond" will open at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Women Impressionists will run from June 21, 2008 to September 21.

Here's more from the press release.. "In a day when a woman leads the House of Representatives and another campaigns for President, it might be hard to imagine a time when the work of four women painters was marginalized because of strict social rules and the artists’ gender. For many decades, the four artists celebrated in Women Impressionists were treated with critical ambivalence and lacked major public exhibitions. It is only now that their innovative styles and contribution to Impressionism are showcased in a groundbreaking exhibition this summer at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, the exclusive U.S. venue. Women Impressionists: Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzalès, Marie Bracquemond is on view from June 21 to September 21, 2008. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to directly compare the work of these women artists by bringing many pieces together for the first time."

Art News Blog Comments:
Here's what I don't get. Why in the heck would anyone complain to you about such things? I suppose they issues they haven't dealt with or they frankly haven't anything better to do. Oh, it's their choice to read your blog and if they don't like then just leave. End of story. Pretty simple really.

I think your blog is fine, really fine.

Thanks!

I fully agree with the above comment.

In addition I'll point out that the museum blurb you quote is politically correct cobblers. For a start this "groundbreaking" exhibition is currently on show in Germany: "the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, Germany, will be showing Women Impressionists: Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva González and Marie Bracquemon from 22 February to 1 June 2008" (quote from my blog). So it's old news by the time this exhibition reaches the States.

Secondly, this myth of women being downtrodden and marginalized totally ignores that medieval creative genius Hildegard von Bingen. She proved that a woman with creative genius could rise to the top. I did a post on her last year. Feel free to quote it whenever you get pestered by feminists:

Women's Studies teach nothing about Hildegard von Bingen, because she blows their myths sky high.

Try her music. It's superb.

Anonymous, that's an excellent question.

Perhaps it makes them feel important. Maybe their complaint makes them feel right, and my actions wrong, which makes them feel a little more confident about their place in the world.

I understand that zealots need their beliefs and rules to function at any kind of normal state, but that doesn't mean that I'll stand there and entertain their ramblings. I'm tired of nuts trying to convert others to this cause or that cause. If I want to know more about something I'll read a book or ask an expert.

I feel sorry for the next Jehovas witness that knocks on my door as I'm tired of being nice and accommodating to others..lol.

Ian, I havent heard of Hildegard von Bingen. I'll have to check her out.

I'm really not interested in male/female, black/white, rich/poor, christian/muslim, or any other grouping of people that have an agenda to push. I just love art and that's what I'll post about.

I think there are a few points that have been highlighted on this post.

Firstly, I really think your blog is fine Dion.

In relation to the exhibition, I think it's a good idea to show work that has not previously been seen because the art world was (and it could be argued that it still it) less receptive to female artists.

However I agree that work should be judged on its own merits, if it doesn't interest me I don't care who made it!!

Thanks Helly.

The last sentence of your comment should be the motto of Art News Blog..lol.

Art News Blog: If it doesn't interest me I don't care who made it!!

That's a beauty. I'll use it if the person complains again.

Dion

sheesh, your kidding, you mean you are supposed to have a quota on YOUR blog. I am in agreement with anon.

Nice painting too!! Ermm - isn't that why we are here?

I agree with you - there's not a hint of bias on this blog. I'd just like to point out, though, that you can be a bloke and a feminist all at once. I am :)

Hi - I'm so glad I found this site. I love Impressionism and I have to say that I have not seen this Mary Cassatt painting anywhere before but I totally recognized her dog and the chair! Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is the name of the painting, please? It's fabulous. I'm going to check to see if the exhibit is coming this way. Thanks!

Paris, here's the information that I got from the press info site where I got the image from..

Mary Cassatt, American (1844–1926) Visitor in Hat and Coat Holding a Maltese Dog, ca. 1879. Oil on canvas. Private Collection

Thank you!
