  Australian Paintings Found in Texas
Australian PaintingsSimilar to the last post, but much less fantastical, moderately valuable Australian paintings have been showing up in Texas, USA.

This year there have been two Australian paintings bought from Texas thrift stores/charity shops for very small amounts and have been valued by auction houses for much higher amounts.

A John Coburn painting was bought for $45 and is now worth $20,000 and a Grace Cossington Smith was bought for $25 and is now valued at $45,000.

Read more about them on the Sydney Morning Herald website here.

I'm not pointing fingers or doubting the finds, but stories like these do make it easier for forgers. It gives you instant provenance and the works are minor enough to not draw too much scrutiny, but $20,000 or $40,000 is still a nice little pay day. Not as much as $50,000,000 but still worth the effort.

Great find

Me thinks I need to check out the local charity shops more often :)

"Worth" is a subjective term, and in this market, could very well me nada, nothing, zero. A bad Gottlieb and some "thing" arent gonna do well, publicity stunt by auction houses where are feelng the pain.

That's the beauty of them though Donald. Theyre minor paintings that fly under the radar, but would still be nice little money makers. The two artists are well known in Australian art circles, so there would be plenty of buyers for them.

I'm not saying theyre fakes, just that it would be a good way to sell forgeries.

Press Releases like this are the same as with political soundbites, meant to drive up prices and ratings. The one looks like a bad rip off of a bad American artist, Adolph Gottliebes grossly overused silly ceirl, like a sun,a nd somne Kline type calligraphy done as witha paint roller underneath. Artists are as bad as polticians and pop movie moguls, they always jump on the latest in thing to make a buck. And produce even worse wallpaper. Just what IS that other thing, a sea anenome? Worth would be about what those Pollock people paid.

Here's a better view of the Grace Cossington Smith painting. It's wild flowers and a piece of coral. She was influenced by Cezanne the man.

And yeah, the other looks very Adolph Gottlieb. I think it's an early John Coburn though as he ended up developing his own style later in life.

I dont know a whole lot about either artist as their work didnt do a lot for me.

OK, can see it now, just bad impressionism. And sorry about the typose, here at work doing some ^&**%&* so I dont have to sell out. Work makes the world go round.

ACDE

Teaches me to always listen to my wife. Never had more than ten people in line before, must have been forty this time, with lots of old folks who couldnt figure stuff out and holding it up, not enough booths to vote in. Gonna be interesting, but where the hell where all these people before? Losers. It is our DUTY to vote, and pick the lesser evil.
go Obama!

ACDE always and forever!

One mmore statte and you can forgive us forever, well for an administration or two. Obama is given 207 electoral vote, Cali has 55 for him and only needs 272. Ten away. Whole west coast is going his way, and hopefuly NC and Virginia, taht would be nice to get some southern states. If Indiana goes, the entire yankee nation of 1865 goes Obama. Party on, for one nite, and then we get to work. And that means YOU artiste nation. No more weak self absorbed BS. Volunteer, help someone in the real world.

Yeah, I didnt really want to publicly burn your flag or do a post with a title like "America Votes: We're Retarded"..lol

I would have liked to see Obama with a 98% vote though ;-)

I dont support any party, just like common sense.. and the planet we live on.
