Shepard Fairey Wine Label for Kenwood Vineyards
Two wonderful things coming together; art and wine. Street artist and Barack Obama supporter Shepard Fairey has created a wine label for the Kenwood Vineyards in California.

I must confess that I spend a lot of time looking at wine labels (and consuming wine responsibly), but I see very few wineries turning to fine artists for their wine labels. I always thought wine and art were a wonderful mix, so it seems natural to commission artists for wine labels.

Here's a detail of the wine bottle cap designed by Shepard Fairey with his Obey Giant logo.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is a series of French wines dating back to 1945 with wine labels done by famous artists. Giants like Georges Braque, Salvador Dali, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Georg Baselitz have created labels for the wine. See the Baron Philippe de Rothschild website here or a website showing all the artist wine labels online here.

Comments:
Actualy see lots of artist labels, Miro and others, just not on the major wineries like Kenwood. Which is small compared to Gallo, but is a table wine. We got hudnres of wineries in Cali, over a hundred now in central cali paso robles area, let alone the hundreds of Sonoma and Napa, and places north.
But wineries do tend to be conservative, and dont want splashy art on dining tables, as most sell directly to restaurants or wine clubs.

Drank so decent Spanish sparkling wine last night, goes better with our food than champagne, which is really for caviar and rich creamy foods of northern Europe, not the freshness of the Mediterranean. Saving the good stuff for family. partying gets the simple stuff, as our focus is on other things.

pray for Obama, he will need it.
Like we get your left over grapes, you probably do of ours too.

It's actually VERY difficult to get any Cali wines in my area. There's a liquor store here in my town that is the size of a supermarket, but they don't have one single bottle of Cali wine in it. I dont know if its a tax thing or a competition thing or what it is.

There's a very long shelf of international wines from everywhere, so it's not just because we dont buy alien grape juice.

There's a few places online I can get it from though.

And I have never tried caviar. Good cheese and crackers is about as classy as I get..lol.

I find it interesting that you call Fairey a "fine artist". He's a plagiarist hack is what he is.

Fine art is about serving the needs and desires of the rich. Creative arts about god and defining mankind, and they only ones that are truly important. fairly is a designer, an applied art and qyuite usefull, unlike academic art which only serves the decadent, and not mankind. We all need purpose, at least he has one. But looks like he is now going on to serve himself alone. Hey, its business, and if he can make a buck serving customers needs, fine. But he is neither a fine nor creative artist. And frontin if he presents himself as such, and will fail in the long run, fads always die.

Copying art is his thing.. that's nothing new or shocking.. plenty of artists do it. Picasso is the biggest art thief ever and people don't seem to have a problem with his art.

I do think artists should mention the art/artists that theyre ripping off, just like they do in music.

There's gallery art which serves a small, rich group; there's real art that has impact on and resonates with surrounding culture. Sometimes folks flow back and forth between the two... Shepard has become one of those in both worlds.

I love his work and find it cool to see his work on a wine bottle; nice! -B

Too bad hes not a real artist!. Call him what you want but do not call him an ARTIST. Well.. actually he's just a CON-artist.
