The Many Faces of Mona Lisa

leonardos mona lisa

For the past couple of years I have been collecting Mona Lisa pictures from the internet. I like organizing things into categories and then adding to the collection over time. I have image collections of chairs, stairs, birds, bath tubs, black paintings, white paintings, and so on. It sounds crazy but it’s probably healthier than collecting cats, wives or stamps ;-) Continue Reading

In the Studio Painting

painting studio

When I restarted Art News Blog at the beginning of this month I told myself that I wouldn’t make it my own personal diary and would just stick to regular art news, but blaaah, where’s the fun in that? There’s a whole bunch of regular art news sites out there doing great jobs and I don’t wish to compete with them. I just post stuff that interests me and my studio interests me! So here’s what I’m doing in the studio..Continue Reading

Big Blue French Cock

big blue cock in london

I noticed that all the newspapers had fun with the headline of this story on the massive cock erected on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square. London’s mayor, Boris Johnson unveiled the thunderous blue cock by German feminist artist Katharina Fritsch. OK, I have had my fun with it too, back to work now.Continue Reading

Philip Wolfhagen at Newcastle Art Gallery

Australian painter Philip Wolfhagen

Illumination The art of Philip Wolfhagen at the Newcastle Art Gallery was well worth the visit. Everything else about my trip into Newcastle today was a disaster, but the exhibition was nice. I had hyped it up in my head before I saw it as I really do love the way Wolfhagen uses paint, so I went in there expecting to be totally blown away! And a few paintings did blow me away, but overall it was just a very good exhibition of landscape paintings rather than the religious experience or art orgasm I had expected.Continue Reading

Richard Renaldi’s Touching Strangers

richard renaldi touching strangers

I really like the idea behind these photographs by Richard Renaldi. He places complete strangers together, usually from very different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. His first intentions may have been to show a tenderness and unity between the differences, but we’re a very divided animal.Continue Reading

10 Year Old Mini Hirst

10 year old child painter

Ok, I have been posting too many child prodigy posts lately but somebody keeps showing me new precocious little artists and I really do think we grown ups could learn something from them. I promise this will be my last artist prodigy post for a while though. Kieron Williamson is 10 years old and has sold almost 1.5 million pounds worth of paintings!Continue Reading

Indian Child Prodigy Shorya Mahanot

6 year old child prodigy

It seems child prodigies are becoming more common by the day. I recently mentioned the 3 year old artist prodigy Iris Grace Halmshaw and looked at what grown up artists could learn from the mini artists. Well here’s another artist prodigy, a 6 year old boy from India named Shorya Mahanot.Continue Reading

I have a thing for quotes. Mostly art quotes but I’ll also collect them from whatever topic I happen to be learning about at the time. I used to have notebooks filled with quotes from books that I had read! The Internet made my quotes addiction easier to maintain and manage. Here’s some famous art quotes about money, business.. and stuff ;-) Continue Reading

Mobile Phone Art

samsung galaxy note 2 art

Up until very recently my mobile/cell phone was an old Nokia brick that didn’t know what the Internet was. When it finally died on me I decided I would get with the times and upgrade to a smart phone. I didn’t want an Apple iPhone as everyone seems to have one.. and me being me had to go with something different. So I went with a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 because it had a big screen and a PENCIL!!Continue Reading
