Dora Maar Photographs Picasso’s Guernica

pablo picasso guernica

I have seen sketches and drawings leading up to and relating to Pablo Picasso’s giant Guernica painting, but I haven’t seen it photographed in stages. Henriette Theodora Marković, better known as Dora Maar captured the masterpiece from start to finish. I like how it evolves, even though it was a very planned painting, it still grew and changed as it progressed. Picasso thought of it as capturing the metamorphosis of a painting rather than simply recording the stages.Continue Reading

Bastard Chairs in China

bastard chairs

A friend just shared the bastard chairs photographed by German born, Hong Kong based photographer Michael Wolf. They’re chairs with character, chairs that have been repaired, added to, converted, improved, made more comfortable, and toughened. The chairs are function over form, which is probably why I think they’re so beautiful. The bastards look orphaned but very loved.Continue Reading

Cup of Coffee

coffee painting

I painted a few cups of coffee last year because I really like coffee! I’m now trying to quit the stuff, which is probably why I’m looking back over my coffee paintings. This is about the 5th time I have tried quitting coffee and I really have no faith in my ability to stop just yet. That sweet smelling bean keeps calling me back. Continue Reading

Beautiful Death – The Catacomb Saints

skeletons with jewels

How much cooler are these dead saints covered in bling than Damien Hirst’s diamond skull? The 400 year old skeletons were dressed up and decorated by churches and distributed to other churches and monasteries throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland. They’re each dressed as a particular saint but the skeletons didn’t necessarily belong to anyone of any great religious importance. The jewels, costumes, armor and other bling were meant to represent the heavenly treasures that awaited the faithful in death. I would much prefer my gold in this life ;-) Continue Reading

Sydney Contemporary 13

sydney contemporary art fair

I should be heading down to Sydney this weekend as there’s the new and much talked about Sydney Contemporary art fair on, but I just couldn’t be bothered. I know.. what kind of an art blogger am I?! A poor one at the moment. It’s only a couple of hours drive but I usually like to stay in Sydney for the night to catch up with what’s on. Since I can’t afford to stay the night I’m not going. Rich country problems, huh? Continue Reading

American Billionaire Art Addict

alice walton art museum

I think the only good billionaire is an art collecting billionaire but I’m biased, I really like art. Forbes business magazine has declared the Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton to be the richest American art collector with a fortune of $33.5 billion. In the past few years the billionaire has gone from Sunday collector to all out museum collector!Continue Reading

Old Painter Tries Tattoos

john olsen tattoo

The 85 year old master painter John Olsen has given the tattoo gun a go for the first time. He has tattooed one of his scribbly iconic  frogs on the upper leg of his friend and fellow landscape painter Luke Sciberras. I think I would prefer an ink on paper Olsen frog as the ink on leg Olsen frog sounds more painful.Continue Reading

Moran Prizes in Australia

doug moran art competition

Entries close on the 25th of this month for the Moran prizes in Australia. It’s one of the more popular art competitions around with a total of $300,000 up for grabs. The prizes include the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and The Moran Contemporary Photographic Prizes. Painter Ben Quilty will be one of the judges for the portrait prize, so I’m thinking if you do painterly paintings you probably should enter.Continue Reading

Other Criteria Shop

damien hirst shop

I used to mention Damien Hirst almost weekly as he was always up to something new and/or outrageous, but I have been back blogging for two and a half months now and I still haven’t done a post on the man. I’m not sure if it’s because I have matured during my 3 year break from blogging, perhaps because Hirst isn’t doing anything new now, or maybe the novelty just wore off. Continue Reading
