3 Year Old Autistic Child Prodigy

Child Prodigy Iris Grace

Every few years there seems to be a new child prodigy pop up. Back when I was active on Art News Blog there were the 4 year old painter Marla Olmstead, the 11 year old Akiane and a few others. The new kid on the block is only 3 years old. Iris Grace Halmshaw is also autistic and hasn’t started talking yet.

I watched some of her videos on youtube and she really does work like an artist. She has this funny quirk where she has to be holding something in her left hand while she’s painting with her right hand. She’s a cutie!

I’m still not a believer in child prodigies though. She’s just an awesome little child having fun with paint, nothing more. Would her work stand up without the cute factor? Probably not. I know, I’m getting older and grumpier, but really, it’s the story being sold here, not the art. And grown up artists could probably learn something from that ;-)

Water Dance is the title of this one above. I’m assuming she had some outside help with the naming of the works as she can’t talk yet.

This painting is called Whisper. Most of the works seem to be available for purchase as prints. The originals are being kept for her first solo exhibition. You’ll be able to bid for them online too!

Honestly, I think some of them look a little massaged, but that’s just me, I’m a skeptic! Watch her at work on a few painting on youtube. She is definitely talented and definitely having fun.. and that’s all that matters.

Cute huh?
See more of her work at her official website, which is awesomely presented, tells a good story, and puts most adult artist websites to shame! I would love to know how many visitors she’s getting and how many prints she is selling. Some of the proceeds from her upcoming solo exhibition and online auction will go to the National Autistic Society and the Autism Research Trust.

  1. Good for her.
Good to see you have started blogging again after all this time.

  2. Thanks Jen. Good to be back! No more vanishing tricks from me. This time around I might try getting a few other people to do posts too, so if I do vanish again the posts wont stop.

  3. Didn’t Picasso say something about an artist’s greatest achievement being when he [or she ] can begin to paint like a child ? You would know the quote…

  4. Maybe it’s this Picasso quote Jacqueline..
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

  5. That’s the one ! Thanks, Dion.
