- Needs
and Wants For Sale - The internet seems to have spawned a
whole movement of entrepreneurial artists that have worked out that
an idea and a little viral marketing can get you a lot of attention
and maybe even a little money.
- Pop
Artist Peter Blake and Coke - The British pop artist Sir Peter
Blake has teamed up with Coke to produce a large work of art on the
banks of the River Thames in London. Only a pop artist could do this
and get away with it!
- Do
or Die List for Artists - It's not a serious list that an
artist should live by and it's not a complete list, so please do add
to it or criticize it by leaving your comments.
- Artist
Press Kits for Media and Art Galleries - Art Fag City (Paddy
Johnson) recently posted some good tips for putting together artist
press kits and press releases. She points to a number of posts and
articles online that offer some good advice on the topic.
- Etch
A Sketch Art - George Vlosich - The artist George Vlosich
has a video posted on YouTube.com that has been viewed more than 1,600,000
times. It's of him doing an Etch A Sketch drawing for the Cleveland
Cavaliers basketball team.
- Post
It Notes and Marketing Art - Neatorama mentioned a story over
at CNN about 19 year old David Alvarez. He has created a portrait
of Ray Charles with more than 2000 colored Post-it notes.
- Art
Car Boot Fair and Car Art - HellyUK has pointed out a couple
interesting links relating to the Promoting your Art post yesterday.
- Promoting
Your Art While Driving - Here's an interesting way of promoting
your art. Barbara Rush has spent a measly $79.55 on putting this ad
on the tire cover of her car. It's an image of her work with her website
address clearly visible.
- Being
a Professional Artist - Sylvia White has a good resource for
artists starting out (or established artists that are not good with
being organized) called Art Advice. One of her articles is like a
checklist for an artist turning professional called The "Okay,
I think I'm ready to be a professional artist," Checklist.
- New
York City Rubbish Art - When I first saw Justin Gignac's New
York City rubbish in a box for sale I thought it was funny. I thought
some more about it and thought it was silly. But after doing even
more thinking and after having a look around his website, I now think
he's pretty smart.
- Hillary
Clinton for President? - No, artnewsblog hasn't become a political
news blog. Daniel Edwards has created a sculpture called "The
Presidential Bust of Hillary Rodham Clinton: The First Woman President
of the United States of America".
- Art-o-mat
Art Vending Machine - The more I think about the Art-o-mat,
the more I like it! It's a vending machine that sells affordable original
art.
- Hazel
Dooney Print - The Australian artist Hazel Dooney has a high
resolution work that can be downloaded online and printed out as an
original print. She will also sign the work if you send it to her,
along with a stamped, self addressed envelope.
- Artist
Makes $25,000 on eBay - In the last post I mentioned how I
thought it is pretty important for artists to have good business and
marketing skills. A painter that was recently interviewed here is
a great example of an artist that understands the value of marketing
yourself and creating a brand or an image.
- Challenges
of Being an Artist - I think in this new world of mass media,
hype, and money it's all about marketing. Artists often make it difficult
for themselves because they're often humble, not very business savvy,
not willing to invest in themselves, or don't know anything about
marketing and branding.
- Artist
Blogs - To start a blog, or not to start a blog? That was
the question that the artist Robert Genn recently spoke about in his
latest Painter's Keys newsletter. He quoted George Bernard Shaw..
"When you know the artist you think less of the art."
- Thomas
Kinkade Art - I really admire artists that can turn their
passion into a viable living, and feel I should bow down to the few
artists around that become fabulously wealthy from doing what they
love.
- Marketing
Art Online - Search Engine Optimization expert Aaron Wall
recently published an article discussing how he would go about marketing
art online over at his SEO blog. He talks about how he marketed an
artist's site when he was first learning the ropes in regards to SEO,
and how he would do it now that he has a few more years experience.
- Contemporary
Art Trends - The new ARTnews magazine for February has an
interesting article about the top 10 art trends in contemporary art.
It mentions the similarities that contemporary art has with historical
movements like Mannerism or the Baroque period (If its sweet
and sad, sentimental and repulsive, cute and creepy, it must be postmodern
mannerism).
- Art
Website Design Tips - Carol Pentleton of thedigitalartist.com
has a list of 10 things to think about when designing your website
(if you're an artist).
- Putting
Your Art Online - Here's an article over at Linkism.com discussing
a couple reasons why and how to put your art online.. (I think most
artists have already done that, right?)
