Shafak on Trial in Turkey - The Turkish novelist Elif Shafak
will face charges of "insulting the Turkish identity" this
week in Istanbul. Just a week ago the British artist Michael Dickinson
was charged with "insulting the dignity of the Prime Minister",
so it's probably not a good time to be saying or doing anything too
radical in the country at the moment.

Modern Art Museum - Turkey has it's first museum of modern
art located in Istanbul. It has been put together with the help of
several wealthy art collectors, philanthropists, and a lesser contribution
from the Turkish government.

Ancient Paintings - The problem with having such a rich and
plentiful source of archeological treasures is that it's so much more
difficult to look after every site. I remember in Turkey some of the
early Christian paintings in Kapadokya had initials scratched all
over them. Only the best sites were really protected from vandals
and thieves as there were just so many of them.
