- Emily
Patrick Exhibition - The English artist Emily Patrick has
some impressive paintings online here. They're impressive in an understated
way. The paintings are mostly small, color is used conservatively,
and the subjects include things like clumps of grass, eggs, and tree
leaves.
- Animal
Rights Artist Angela Singer - Being an animal rights activist
seems to give the artist the right to use dead animals, in the same
way that a black man can make black jokes. If Damien Hirst did this
work we would just think that the old British artist is just being
sick again. But because there's a message behind Angela Singer's work,
I feel fine about it.
- Michael
Kalish License Plates - Taking the car theme of the past few
days a little further, Angela has pointed out a story about an artist
that uses car number plates as a medium. The license plate art of
Michael Kalish sells for between $5,000 and $150,000.
- David
Cerny's Saddam Hussein - Cerny is an artist that enjoys getting
a reaction from his audience. He is famous for works like his "Shark"
sculpture, where a model of the former Iraqi leader Saddam Husseim
is suspended in a glass box filled with formaldehyde. It's a tribute
to everyone's favorite bad boy, Damien Hirst and his "The Physical
Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" work.
- For
the Love of God but Cheaper - Damien Hirst's diamond skull
"For the Love of God" might be out of your price range,
but "For the Laugh of God" might be within reach. Sure,
it's an appropriation and the diamonds are fake, but you'll save about
one hundred million dollars on the price of it.
- Box
of Love - I received a box of love in the post recently. It's
a cardboard box, painted by the abstract painter Franck de Las Mercedes,
with a label that says "Handle with care, Fragile, Contains:
LOVE".
- Paul
Ruiz Paintings - Anyone interested in expressive figurative
paintings might find the work of Paul Ruiz interesting. His charcoal
drawings are impressive too. Theyre very Frank Auerbach (filled with
emotion and almost carved out of paper)
- New
York City Rubbish Art - When I first saw Justin Gignac's New
York City rubbish in a box for sale I thought it was funny. I thought
some more about it and thought it was silly. But after doing even
more thinking and after having a look around his website, I now think
he's pretty smart.
- Stock
Ticker Symbol Paintings - WOW - I think it helps to know the
subject that you paint. For example, if I was a farmer I would probably
paint cows and chickens because it's what I would know best. But what
would I paint if I was a stockbroker in a past life?... Stock ticker
symbols!!
- Bootlegs
by Eric Doeringer - One of the things that I find most interesting
about this blog is the comments posted by people. I like seeing different
opinions, people often add to or complete a story, and I sometimes
find interesting links to other art sites.
- Artist
Documentaries Online - Gabriel Shaffer - Art Scene Asheville
is a series of artist documentaries by Ursula Gullow, profiling working
artists in Asheville. They're put together really well too, which
can be refreshing after watching a bunch of artist videos on YouTube.com.
- Five
Dollars Auction on eBay - A single digit painting from the
Money Series by Anthony White is currently being auctioned on eBay.
The $5 painting is from the US dollars series. It was originally sold
by Anthony for 5 US dollars, but the highest bid is $385 at the moment
(with 6 days of bidding left).
- Wacom
Artist Profile of Leith O'Malley - Fellow Australian artist
Leith O'Malley has been profiled on the Asian Wacom community website
this month. Leith does a good job of blurring the line between paint
and pixels.
- Helping
Artists and Replying to Emails - Hazel Dooney has a new artist
blog up and has been thinking about what it is that offends her about
getting requests from artists that want help selling their own work.
- Selling
Art Online - USA Today has wrote an article about how artists
are taking advantage of the internet to sell their work.
- Toothpick
Portraits - For those that are thinking about getting their
portrait painted, but want something a little different, why not get
a toothpick portrait? ;-)
- Artist
Belinda Eaton Interview - I recently asked the contemporary
artist Belinda Eaton a few questions about her art. She was featured
on the Star Portraits with Rolf Harris television program from the
BBC.
- Turkish
Artists Online - Here's some more artists by country. I've
gone looking for artists in Turkey this time, so I hope most of them
are new to people.
- Money
Series Painting - I recently received a new painting to add
to my small but growing art collection. It's called 7 Euros by the
Australian artist Anthony White. Seven Euros is currently worth 7
euros, including postage and handling ;-)
- American
Artists Online - On my (cyber) world tour of artists by country,
I've found that the most represented bunch of artists online are definitely
Americans. I struggle finding artists from countries like China, India,
or even Germany online, but everywhere I look I find websites by American
artists.
- Canadian
Artists Online - Continuing on from the Australian artists,
here's some great Canadian artists with an online presence.
- Australian
Artists Online - I plan to post small lists of artists by
country that I come across online. I'm starting with Australian artists
because I'm biased.. and Australian ;-)
- Genpets
Bioengineered Buddy - I saw a story over at artful visions
about these weird little cute creatures called Gen Pets. They're supposedly
living toys that you have to care for.
- To
Eat Crow - I haven't heard of the saying "to eat crow",
but Jafabrit has used it to get back at her daughter over a minor
squabble. It basically means that you have to admit that you were
wrong about something.
- Money
Paintings - Euro Series - The Australian artist Anthony White
has started work on the Euro series of paintings. After the success
of his USD, AUD, and Pound series of money, he expects similar interest
in the Euros series.
- Dan
Bodner Paintings from Photographs - After the discussion on
painting from photographs, Karl Zipser has gone out and almost been
converted into a photograph using artist ;-)
- Hazel
Dooney Print - The Australian artist Hazel Dooney has a high
resolution work that can be downloaded online and printed out as an
original print. She will also sign the work if you send it to her,
along with a stamped, self addressed envelope.
- Ron
English Billboards - I watched a documentary on the contemporary
pop artist Ron English recently. He is probably most famous for defacing
public billboards in America. He covers legitimate advertisements
on prominent billboard with his own version of pop culture.
- Caroline
Magerl Artist Profile - A new artist profile has been added
over at artquotes.net. The Australian painter and illustrator Caroline
Magerl paints quirky, expressive works that seem to capture emotion
more than the person being painted.
- Contemporary
Artists Online - Here's a selection of some super-fantastic
contemporary artists online. I browse the Internet quite a bit, and
am always bookmarking sites in my favorites, so I thought I might
share a few.
- Ben
Quilty's Car Paintings - ..But the car paintings of the young
Australian painter Ben Quilty are really quite impressive. Perhaps
it's because he knows his subject..
- Rupert
Murdoch Portrait Painting - The British portrait artist Jonathan
Yeo has finished a portrait of one of the most powerful men in the
media industry. The Australian born, American adopted media mogul
of the News Corporation company (yes, he owns the Simpsons cartoon
too!), Rupert Murdoch sat for Yeo in his London studio.
- Marc
Quinn to do Kate Moss - The English artist Marc Quinn plans
to imortalize the supermodel Kate Moss as the "Aphrodite of our
age", with five bronze sculptures.
- Rolf
Harris's Portrait of the Queen - Australian expat Rolf Harris,
now based in the United Kingdom caused a bit of a stir with his portrait
of the Queen.
- to finances,
or lack of them, and thankfully they're going to keep going again.
- Rubbish
Art Given Away - Tomoko Takahashi - An installation of 7,600
pieces of junk has been given away at the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington
Gardens, UK. Japanese born artist Tomoko Takahashi spent three days
installing the work, titled "My Playstation".
- Marla
Olmstead on 60 Minutes - I did not see the episode on 60 minutes
recently, but it's interesting to see what people have to say about
it. See the two previous posts on Art News Blog and the comments that
people have had.
- Hitler
Pop Controversy - German born American artist Walter Gaudnek
has managed to upset people by holding an exhibition of Adolf Hitler,
showing him in a more casual and positive way.
- Artist
Offended - An interesting post over at The Art Life blog,
where an artist gets nasty over a little criticism. Sure I have been
offended, possibly even hurt by criticism before but it was unconstructive
and hurtful criticism, certainly nothing as mild as this.
- 4
Year old Marla Olmstead - The so called "Child Prodigy"
Marla Olmstead is in the news again, gaining more international exposure
than most veteran artists. Her work is now selling for up to $15,000
each.
- More
Pain = Better Art - French conceptial artist Amelia Gentleman
believes that her best art comes from her lowest times. Particularly
bad relationship break-ups have inspired her to create some of her
best work.
- 4
year old art prodigy? - A four-year-old girl is wowing the
New York art world with paintings that are drawing comparisons with
Jackson Pollock and Wassily Kandinsky. Marla Olmstead, from Binghamton,
in New York state, has been painting since just before she was two
years old.
