Art crime is big business with an estimated $6 billion in losses annually! Here’s a list of the FBI’s Top 10 art crimes at the moment..

Iraqi Looted and Stolen Artifacts – The significant Statue of Entemena was recovered in 2006 but there are still many pieces missing.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Theft – Thieves stole as much as $300 million worth of art from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston in 1990 with paintings by Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Manet being among them.Continue Reading

Art Crimes

ArtInfo has an interesting little piece on art crimes and how they affect the market. The strangest form of art crime has to be stealing sculpture for scrap metal. Like the 2 ton Reclining Nude by Henry Moore that was stolen from the Henry Moore Foundation in 2005. As scrap metal it would have made £3,000 or $5,800, but it was insured for £2 million.

They list the top four art crimes as Vandalism, Forgery/Deception, Art Theft, and Antiquities Looting.Continue Reading

The FBI have released a top 10 list of art crimes and are seeking the help of the public. They are a list of masterpieces from some of the biggest names in art. Here’s a the list..
Caravaggio, Nativity with San Lorenzo and San Francesco.
Estimated to be worth $20 million
Stolen from the Oratory of San Lorenzo, Palermo, in Italy in October 1969 by two thieves. and removed the Caravaggio Nativity from its frame.Continue Reading

Stolen Munch Paintings

There’s either a lot of art thieves in Norway or it’s just very cool to have an original Edvard Munch hanging in the living room. Two lithographs and a small watercolor by the Norwegian artist were recently stolen from a luxury hotel but have been recovered after a police raid in Oslo.

Eight men and a woman were in police custody. There has been no connection found to the recent theft of Munch’s iconic Scream painting.

Scream gallery improves security

After the daring daylight robbery by masked gunmen at the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway, they’re upgrading their security at the museum. Among other things, they’re installing new surveillance alarms at the museum. The current system did work and police were at the museum within minutes, but robbers pointing guns at people is always going to be difficult to secure against. Art Thieves took the famous Scream painting and a Madonna painting by Munch.Continue Reading
