10 Sketchy Police Sketches

wanted police sketches

Things are probably easier now with computer software but I couldn’t think of a more challenging job than a police sketch artist. Some of the ‘artists’ below should think about finding less challenging careers as this one doesn’t seem to be working out for them. Something not involving portrait sketches or anything at all to do with art would be more appropriate ;-) Continue Reading

Adult Coloring Book by Ryan Hunter

colouring book for grown ups

I know this has recently gone viral as half of the people on my facebook friends list have probably shared it over the past few days, but for the 3 of you out there who haven’t seen the Coloring Book for Grown Ups, here it is. It’s an adult activity book with a variety of challenges and tasks to complete which could either make you laugh or cry, depending how your life has turned out. It is currently the best selling comedy book on Amazon.Continue Reading

Pieter Bruegel Paints Farts

painter of farts

Is the Flemish Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder the only one to paint farts? I would have thought yes, but no, there’s more than a few childish artists out there that have painted farts. Bruegel’s art may not have been as strange as the bizarre worlds created by Hieronymus Bosch but some of his paintings do come close. They don’t get much stranger than his 1562 work The Fall of the Rebel Angels which depicts a scene from that equally nutty piece of literature, the Book of Revelation. Among the farting beasts and fallen angels are all kinds of weird and horrible creatures.Continue Reading

Draw My Selfies App

drawing selfies app

I haven’t used this phone app called French Girls but browsing through their picture gallery online kinda made me smile so I thought I better share it. I couldn’t use it even if I wanted to though as I have an Android phone and there only seems to be an iPhone version available at the moment. People submit their selfies (photos of themselves) and users of the app are then asked to draw them. Some artists take the job seriously and other don’t.Continue Reading

Gilbert Legrand Sculpture Out of Tools and Everyday Objects

french artist sculpture

I love these quirky sculptures made from everyday objects by the French artist Gilbert Legrand. He uses knives, scissors, door hinges, paint brushes, cork screws, zippers, and all sorts of other household items to create little people and animals. Art, like life, is too often serious and weighed down with issues. We need more fun art :-) Continue Reading

Tracey Emin’s Used Bed For Sale

tracey emin dirty bed for auction

Christie’s will be selling British artist Tracey Emin’s dirty unmade bed at their upcoming Post-War and Contemporary art auction in London on the 1st of July. It also comes with yellowing bed sheets and pillows, her dirty panties, several empty bottles of vodka, used condoms, an ashtray, empty packets of cigarettes, various pills and tablets, an old pair of slippers, an old newspaper, a belt, some luggage, and a reputation that should see the iconic work reach more than $2 million dollars!Continue Reading

Car Company Opel’s Animals Colliding Ad Campaign

opel car company ad campaign

I’m not sure this ad campaign by the German car maker Opel really works. I guess it works to some extent as it has prompted me to share it, which means it’s viral and is doing what it’s meant to (free advertising), but other than that, I’m not so impressed. Maybe I’m just getting old and losing my sense of humor, but I don’t find a cute little penguin stuck in the bum of a polar bear funny. The ad agency Scholz & Friends created the campaign to highlight the new forward collision alert feature on Opel vehicles and the joke is that animals don’t have this function.Continue Reading

Funny Animal Portraits

zoo portraits by yago partal

Some of these creations by Spanish photographer Yago Partal are much more successful than others. The Zoo Portraits project humanizes animals, making a cow look less like beef and a pig look less like bacon. I think we’re meant to relate to the animals, but it’s just as much about smiling too. They’re fun. Their outfits generally match the character of the animal.Continue Reading

Old Master Artist Statements

old master artist statements

I’m not sure if artist statements are becoming less important or I have just stopped reading them as they’re just a massive wank, but wouldn’t it be interesting to see the old masters waffle on about themselves in the almost unreadable language we use today? John Seed over at the Huffington Post thought it would be, so he sat down and wrote a few for them. They’re really quite funny.Continue Reading

Bastard Chairs in China

bastard chairs

A friend just shared the bastard chairs photographed by German born, Hong Kong based photographer Michael Wolf. They’re chairs with character, chairs that have been repaired, added to, converted, improved, made more comfortable, and toughened. The chairs are function over form, which is probably why I think they’re so beautiful. The bastards look orphaned but very loved.Continue Reading
