Most Popular Art Museums in the World

The Art Newspaper has released their annual list of the most popular art museums in the world, with the Louvre in Paris coming in first place with an estimated 8,300,000 visitors.

The most popular exhibition was at the Tokyo National Museum in Japan which attracted more than 10,000 people each day. It was more of a single painting than an exhibition, which makes the figure even more remarkable. Les Demoiselles d’Avignon after One Hundred Years

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York is celebrating 100 years of Pablo Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” painting. The MoMA says..

“The exhibition reunites Les Demoiselles with a group of preparatory studies for the overall composition and for the individual figures, and also includes selected works created immediately before and after the iconic painting that highlight its generative role in the artist’s oeuvre. Discoveries from recent conservation and archival materials tracing Les Demoiselles’s journey to MoMA are also on view in the gallery and in the mezzanine of The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Education and Research Building.”Continue Reading

The dead shark floating in formaldehyde is an iconic work that symbolizes the Britart movement and won Hirst a Turner prize nomination in 1992.

British art collector and advertising whiz Charles Saatchi has sold the work for more than 6.2 million pounds to an American collector that will donate it to the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
