Art crime is big business with an estimated $6 billion in losses annually! Here’s a list of the FBI’s Top 10 art crimes at the moment..

Iraqi Looted and Stolen Artifacts – The significant Statue of Entemena was recovered in 2006 but there are still many pieces missing.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Theft – Thieves stole as much as $300 million worth of art from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston in 1990 with paintings by Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Manet being among them.Continue Reading

Art Crimes

ArtInfo has an interesting little piece on art crimes and how they affect the market. The strangest form of art crime has to be stealing sculpture for scrap metal. Like the 2 ton Reclining Nude by Henry Moore that was stolen from the Henry Moore Foundation in 2005. As scrap metal it would have made £3,000 or $5,800, but it was insured for £2 million.

They list the top four art crimes as Vandalism, Forgery/Deception, Art Theft, and Antiquities Looting.Continue Reading

Caravaggio’s Kiss of Judas Stolen

A Carravagio masterpiece has been stolen from the Museum of Western and Eastern Art in the Ukraine. The painting has been called both “The Taking of Christ” and “The Kiss of Judas”

From a Reuters report “Police said they entered through a window, bypassing an outdated alarm system by removing a pane of glass rather than breaking it. They then escaped across the museum’s roof.”

The Scream Thieves Jailed

The gang that stole paintings by the Norwegian master, Edvard Munch have been put behind bars. The three art thieves that were convicted received sentences that ranged from 5 and half, through to 9 and a half years each.

Petter Tharaldsen was the driver behind the theft. He received 9 and half years, but was also involved in another unrelated robbery. Bjoern Hoen planned the theft. He was sentenced to 9 years in prison. Stian Skjold was one of the masked gunmen that entered the museum (the other gunman died from a drug overdose last year). He received 5 years for his efforts.Continue Reading

Two Pablo Picasso Paintings Stolen

At least two Pablo Picasso paintings have been stolen from the Paris apartment of the grand-daughter of Picasso, Diana Widmaier-Picasso. The works are estimated to be worth more than $60 million US dollars.

They include a 1938 portrait of Pablo’s daughter Maya holding a doll and a portrait of his second wife Jacqueline Roque.Continue Reading

The Scream Returned

Two years after the daylight robbery of Edvard Munch’s “The Scream”, the painting has been returned safely. In August 2004 “The Scream” and “Madonna” were stolen by masked gunmen from the Munch Museum in Norway.

Looted Picasso

The owner of a 1922 Picasso “Femme en blanc” valued at about $12,000,000 has opted to pay out $6 million to the grandson of a Jewish woman that once owned the painting in 1940. Carlota Landsberg left the painting with a French art dealer while fleeing the Nazis. The art dealer said the Picasso was then looted by the Nazis and it remained missing until 1975 when the current owner acquired it.Continue Reading

Scream gallery improves security

After the daring daylight robbery by masked gunmen at the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway, they’re upgrading their security at the museum. Among other things, they’re installing new surveillance alarms at the museum. The current system did work and police were at the museum within minutes, but robbers pointing guns at people is always going to be difficult to secure against.
