Five artists have been shortlisted for the £25,000 British art competition, the John Moores Painting Prize. The 5 artists are Rae Hicks, Juliette Losq, Mandy Payne, Alessandro Raho and Rose Wylie. Past winners of the prestigious art award include David Hockney in 1967, Mary Martin in 1969, Peter Doig in 1993 and Sarah Pickstone in 2012. Out of the 5 paintings shortlisted I would go with the Rae Hicks work.
Here’s the 5 shortlisted artists for the 2014 John Moores Painting Prize in Britain, listed in order by me (1st, 2nd, etc). So if I’m the judge, first prize goes to..
1) Rae Hicks – Sometimes I Forget That You’re Gone
3) Rose Wylie – PV Windows and Floorboards
The outright winner of the John Moores Prize for 2014 will be announced in September this year. See a full list of all the artists for 2014 at the website here. I also like the paintings of Susie Hamilton (detail at the top of the post), Neal Rock, and Conor Rogers.
I would like to start an objective discussion about the criteria for choosing these paintings? I invite the judges and the general public to add your comments to the end of the following critique of the Hicks painting: http://virtualartacademy.net/home/critique-of-sometimes-i-forget-that-youre-gone-by-rae-hicks-2/
There is also a poll for you to add your views on this artwork.
