Lego Art or the Art of the Brick

Nathan Sawaya is currently touring the United States with his “The Art of the Brick” exhibition. He just finished exhibiting at the Lancaster Museum of Art where record crowds came to see his work.

The director of the museum said “On opening day, we had to open the doors five hours early to accommodate the hundreds of guests waiting in line outside. In my 28 years in this business, I have never seen a response to a show like this before.”

lego art - the art of the brick

The Art of the Brick has now opened at the Discovery Center Museum and will run through to September 3.

The unusual thing about the sculptures of Nathan Sawaya is that they are made entirely from LEGO bricks! The Art of the Brick exhibition has more than thirty works on display with almost one million pieces of lego used to make them.

I wonder how difficult it is to convince collectors that LEGO is of as much value as oils or marble to create art. I like his mosaic portraits here. See the website of Nathan Sawaya here.

  1. I didnt like the portraits at all! The humanlike figures sort of remind me of Gormley in a weird way. I also think the french director, I have the name on my tongue…baaahhh!!! You know him he did the white stripes video a couple of years back.

  2. And to think after my kids grew up I garage sold all our lego’s . What was I thinking of?

  3. oh those are kind of freaky. Yes they do have a gormley feel to them.

  4. wow, how much patience would it take to put all that lego together!!!

  5. Lego is definetly one of the best toys invented. That said, I rather like the way the blue sculpture seems to be building his own arm..

  6. Hello,

I saw a piece of art before that was a picture of a face made up by hundreds of individual black and white (which looked like) singular lego bricks. eg. how a normal rectangular lego brick has 6 studs on top these were slim and just had one. The picture was very effective.

Does anybody know an art supplier where these can be purchased?

    Cheers

  7. I love it! You should check out the Lego Cow Art Car. The Cow Goddess is a Dallas artist that has been seen around town at art galleries since 1997.
