Banksy Retrospective – Unauthorized of Course

banksy unauthorised retrospective

Banksy The Unauthorised Retrospective in London opens today at Sotheby’s S|2 gallery. Steve Lazarides, Banksy’s agent up until 2008 has curated the exhibition which includes some of the artist’s earlier works through to more recent paintings. More than seventy Banksy artworks will be on display which will make it one of his largest formal gallery shows. I thought I would have been tired of Banksy by now, but I still find him interesting. I like that he has one finger up at the system while most other artists are very obedient and drone-like little creatures. Some urban artists will even tell you to be obedient and OBEY your masters. Jean Dubuffet at the S|2 in New York

french artist jean dubuffet

The Jean Dubuffet exhibition at Sotheby’s S|2 gallery in New York finishes up in the next few days. It’s a nice little summary of the artist’s work from the early days through to his last works. The art brut daddio is definitely one of my top ten all time favorite artists. If I was a billionaire I would walk through this exhibition with a shopping cart and come out the other end with it full! ;-) Continue Reading

Seriously, Who Buys This Stuff?

crap art

Coming from a person that thinks art is everything, everywhere.. who buys this crap? I probably have the most varied taste in art that I know of, but I still shake my head when I see some of the contemporary art auctions at Chris-theby’s. I can appreciate a Damien Hirst spot painting, a Jeff Koons balloon sculpture, and a Tracey Emin neon sign, but even I have my limits. I love ugly art, childish art, offensive art, and stupid art. I wouldn’t hang any of these on my wall though.  Continue Reading

El Greco Painting Record

el greco auction record

A bidding war between a Russian collector and an Indian collector saw the 3 to 5 million pound estimate of El Greco’s “Saint Dominic in Prayer” almost double to reach an auction record for the artist of £9,154,500 or about $14,000,000 USD.

Cloaca Shit to be Auctioned at Sotheby’s

An item of interest in Sotheby’s upcoming London auction on the 6th of February is a piece of shit, literally. It’s called CLOACA FAECES (NEW YORK, 26.01.2002, 2.30 P.M.) by the Belgian artist Wim Delvoye. It was created by his shit making machine that I mentioned a while ago.Continue Reading

Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Preview

Sotheby’s has a video preview of their upcoming Sotheby’s Contemporary Art auction in New York on the 11th of November online here. There’s a few important works in it that must have billionaire art collectors licking their lips. Click on “Browse the Catalogue” on the video preview page above to see all the works up for auction.

My favorite painting in the auction is easily Philip Guston’s “Beggar’s Joys” work from 1954/55. There’s no estimate for the work on the Sotheby’s website, but I’m guessing that it’s out of my price range by quite a few million.Continue Reading

Business Artist Damien Hirst

The Damien Hirst circus is over and was a great success. The first night of the Hirst auction raised about 70 million pounds and the second day raised 40,919,700 GBP, which works out to be about $200 million USD in 2 days.

I don’t care what we think of his art.. love it or hate it.. Damien Hirst is a genius! He makes Andy Warhol look like a hippy with no job or credit card.Continue Reading

Damien Hirst Auction

Damien Hirst may have a pile of unsold artworks sitting in a gallery and Robert Hughes may think his work is “tacky,” but there’s still plenty of rich collectors willing to bet their millions on the British artist. Financial crisis and all, Hirst still sets records.

The first night of the much talked about Damien Hirst auction (Beautiful Inside my Head Forever) made about £70 million, which is 8 million pounds above the high estimate by Sotheby’s.Continue Reading

Damien Hirst Auction – Beautiful Inside my Head Forever

The much talked about Damien Hirst auction is coming up soon. I thought it was the 15th of this month, which is why I thought I would mention it now, but it’s the 15th of next month. The Sotheby’s London auction is called “Beautiful Inside My Head Forever” and will take place over two days on the 15th and 16th of September.

There will be 223 lots up for auction, with more than £65 million expected to be raised from the sale. They are new works by the artist, mostly from 2007 and 2008.Continue Reading
