Sydney artist Fiona Lowry has won the 2014 Archibald prize with her portrait of the architect Penelope Seidler. She has been hung in the Archibald twice previously and won the Doug Moran Prize in 2008. I don’t dislike the painting, but it’s definitely not the painting I would have picked to win. Just look at the paintings I picked, none of them won. Michael Johnson won the Wynne prize and Andrew Sullivan won the Sulman. Continue Reading

The 2014 Wynne, Sulman and Archibald Prizes in Australia
The Archibald Prize is probably the most well known art prize in Australia. The lamestream media will report on the portrait prize whether there’s a controversy or not, but selectors and judges will usually try to serve them up some controversy if at all possible. On at the same time as the Archibald is the Wynne prize for landscapes and the Sulman prize for genre/subject painting. It’s all a bit of a circus but it gets the regular tards talking about art, so it has to be a good thing Continue Reading

Armed Robber Steals $150,000 Moran Art Prize
Like my title? I should have a job writing headlines for newspapers. Shocking, catchy, truth stretcher, offensive, etc. But seriously, the Australian artist Nigel Milsom who is currently serving a 6 year prison sentence for armed robbery has won the $150,000 Moran portrait prize for his painting of Uncle Paddy.Continue Reading
The Blake Prize Finalists for 2013
The finalists for the 62nd Blake Prize in Australia have been announced. It’s supposed to be a prize that explores religious and spiritual ideas in art but it’s probably more about who can be the most shocking and vulgar. Being the shit stirrers that a lot of artists are, it’s a great opportunity to share vaginas with teeth, boys masturbating each other and a whole bunch of other wanking good fun with a wider audience. Continue Reading
Moran Prizes in Australia
Entries close on the 25th of this month for the Moran prizes in Australia. It’s one of the more popular art competitions around with a total of $300,000 up for grabs. The prizes include the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and The Moran Contemporary Photographic Prizes. Painter Ben Quilty will be one of the judges for the portrait prize, so I’m thinking if you do painterly paintings you probably should enter.Continue Reading
Chimpanzee Art Competition
Thirty seven year old Brent has taken out first place in the Humane Society of the United States’ Chimpanzee Art Contest. Brent works out of Chimp Haven in Keithville, LA and has won $10,000 for his chimp sanctuary. The artist refuses to use hog hair brushes as he probably thinks pigs are pretty cool, so he only ever paints using his tongue. A chimp using his tongue to paint may sound strange but people have used stranger implements.Continue Reading
