John Olsen: The King Sun Documentary

john olsen documentary

John Olsen is like our art grandfather in Australia. At 86 he keeps on keeping on, producing art and enjoying all the pleasures that life brings with it. In a film directed by Tony Williams to document a new mural 6 meters by 8 meters (20 x 26 ft) in size we see Olsen’s body looking a little rickety but his mind and spirit is as youthful and cheeky as ever. The giant 8 panel mural is his second largest artwork ever, with only his Sydney Opera House mural “Salute to Five Bells” being larger. Continue Reading

10 Famous Black Paintings

ten famous black paintings

In the name of balance and harmony it’s only right to do a list of ten famous black paintings today! Gallery owners will tell you that darker paintings are generally harder to move as a product but we artists seem to do as many black paintings as we do white paintings. With not much more than a color change we move from the purity and light of white to the somber, serious, and melancholy suggestions of black. Lets start with the most famous of all famous black paintings: Goya’s black paintings.Continue Reading

Meaghan Potter Cat Studies

meaghan potter cat studies

I really like these cat studies by Sydney artist Meaghan Potter. She squishes her furry little friends into a circle and leaves us with an abstract pattern that is obviously feline in nature. She says she makes art that revolves around revealing the abstract reality of vision and physical manifestations in nature. Which really just means she looks at cats a little more than most ;-) Continue Reading

Victor Rubin Exhibition to Close Eva Breuer Gallery in Sydney

eva breuer gallery closes

Another art gallery in Sydney will close at the end of this month. After twenty years the Eva Breuer gallery will close its doors for the last time with an exhibition of works by Victor Rubin. Nicky McWilliam, the daughter of the late gallery founder says she no longer has the time required to run the business the way it should be. Coincidentally, Queen’s “Another one bites the dust” song just started playing on my iTunes shuffle!Continue Reading

Cityscape Paintings

newcastle cityscape painting

I have a love/hate relationship with cities but I have always loved cityscape paintings. Cities are like giant still life pictures with ants crawling all over them. Ants in cars, ants in buildings, ants on phones, ants crossing the street.. they’re everywhere. They’re usually as ugly as they are beautiful. Anyway, enough rambling, here’s some cityscape paintings by artists from around the world..Continue Reading

Old Aboriginal Masters

aboriginal bark painting

I’m almost tempted to get in the car and go see this exhibition in Canberra (4 or 5 hours drive) but I’m living in a house with no kitchen, no shower and quite a few missing walls, so I have to get my priorities straight. I’ll leave in the morning! No, just kidding, renovations are ridiculously expensive and I really do want a kitchen. The Old Masters exhibition is on until the 20th of July though, so I could still get there yet.Continue Reading

Brett Whiteley Exhibition in Newcastle

brett whiteley exhibition

I wasn’t planning to look at any art today but I found myself in Newcastle with nothing to do. The thing I drove there for was cancelled, so rather than turning around and driving back home I popped in to see the Brett Whiteley exhibition at the Newcastle Art Gallery: Whiteley on Water. Earlier this week a Brett Whiteley painting sold for $3,927,272 at a Menzies Art Brands auction, breaking his previous record of $3.48 million for his Olgas painting. Armed Robber Steals $150,000 Moran Art Prize

prisoner wins moran prize

Like my title? I should have a job writing headlines for newspapers. Shocking, catchy, truth stretcher, offensive, etc. But seriously, the Australian artist Nigel Milsom who is currently serving a 6 year prison sentence for armed robbery has won the $150,000 Moran portrait prize for his painting of Uncle Paddy.Continue Reading
