Tracey Emin Bed Sells for Millions

tracey emin dirty bed for auction

The dirty, unmade bed with yellowing sheets by British artist Tracey Emin has sold for £2,546,500 or $4,351,969 USD (including buyer’s premium) at a Christie’s auction in London. I already had my fun with the Emin bed last month, so I’ll keep it short. My Bed, the iconic, controversial work from 1998 more than doubled the auction estimate by Christie’s, but I’m not surprised at all. I thought it could have made much more than it did.Continue Reading

10 Famous White Paintings

white artworks by famous painters

I was just thinking about the painter of black, Pierre Soulages and then started thinking about white paintings. I do admire artists who latch on to one color, one topic, one style and run with it their entire career, but I also wonder why they would choose to do such a thing. Is it the money, the lack of imagination, fear of change, or an obsessive compulsive thing? I like chocolate but I wouldn’t like to eat chocolate and nothing else for the rest of my life. Anyway, I went looking for white paintings.Continue Reading

Banksy Retrospective – Unauthorized of Course

banksy unauthorised retrospective

Banksy The Unauthorised Retrospective in London opens today at Sotheby’s S|2 gallery. Steve Lazarides, Banksy’s agent up until 2008 has curated the exhibition which includes some of the artist’s earlier works through to more recent paintings. More than seventy Banksy artworks will be on display which will make it one of his largest formal gallery shows. I thought I would have been tired of Banksy by now, but I still find him interesting. I like that he has one finger up at the system while most other artists are very obedient and drone-like little creatures. Some urban artists will even tell you to be obedient and OBEY your masters. Record Christie’s Auction

alexander calder sculpture

The auction lots may not have been surreal but the prices most certainly were. The Christie’s post war and contemporary art evening sale on Tuesday made a record $744.9 million. That’s close to a billion dollars worth of art sold in one night! If you combine the Monday and Tuesday sales there was $879,574,000 worth of art sold. An $80+ million Francis Bacon and an $84+ million Barnett Newman were the two most expensive lots to sell. How does one start a hedge fund? I think I’m in the wrong game ;-) Continue Reading

Guy Denning Drawings in Paris

britney spears drawing

Guy Denning’s wonderful drawings have popped up in my facebook news feed for as long as I can remember. I don’t see them as much as I would like to lately as facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg is a greedy little cretin (he’s forcing page owners to pay up if they want the people that have already liked their page to see new posts) but that’s another story. Back to the point of this post, Denning is showing a collection of works on paper at the Galerie Brugier Rigail in Paris, France this month.Continue Reading

George Stubbs Dingo and Kangaroo

Historically significant George Stubbs paintings to stay in the UK. A retarded rat looking thing on two legs that’s supposed to be a kangaroo and a fox looking animal that’s supposed to be a dingo will no longer make their way to Australian shores after a campaign backed by British documentary maker David Attenborough saw the artworks slapped with an export ban. David Hockney in San Francisco

david hockney self portrait

For me, David Hockney is one of them artists that creates just as many great paintings as he does terrible paintings. So I can’t say I love the artist, I have to say that I love his good works.. and bad works, not so much. Anyway, the artist is now showing at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California through to the 20th of January. Continue Reading
