Some Expressionist Painters – Just Because

expressionist painters

Here’s some paintings about paint, just because. After the emails and comments from yesterday, I thought I would make today a little less controversial. No pictures of baby killing and no mention of genocide, just good old fashion chunky paint applied by great painters. I love most types of painting, from super-realism through to minimalism, but a good expressive work with paint slapped on and dripping off the canvas will always make me smile the widest :-) Continue Reading

An Emile Nolde retrospective will open on the 5th of March at the Städel Museum in Germany. 140 works by the German Expressionist artist will be on show. They’ll include paintings, watercolors and prints with a focus on his early and late works. This will be the first Nolde retrospective in Germany for 25 years. Continue Reading

Dog Portrait Photography

dog portrait photography

I love these dog portraits by the German photographer Ralph Hargarten. They look very human. He sets them up to be photographed like he would do people and then seems to capture the dogs with very human expressions. The pug dog below is a classic. Pugs are real characters.Continue Reading

Bastard Chairs in China

bastard chairs

A friend just shared the bastard chairs photographed by German born, Hong Kong based photographer Michael Wolf. They’re chairs with character, chairs that have been repaired, added to, converted, improved, made more comfortable, and toughened. The chairs are function over form, which is probably why I think they’re so beautiful. The bastards look orphaned but very loved.Continue Reading

Jonathan Meese Beats Nazi Salute Charge

jonathan meese nazi salute

German artist Jonathan Meese ended up beating charges of doing Nazi salutes. In Germany Nazi gestures are banned. Meese was charged with doing a Nazi salute twice at an event called Megalomania in the Art World in Kassel, Germany. Luckily for Meese, one retarded law can be beaten with the law that says works of art are exempt.Continue Reading

Heide Hatry Not a Rose

Heidi Hatry at Stux Gallery

I only know of Heide Hatry through her pigskin portraits of people. They were fascinating and intriguing but also weird and a little bit ugly. Her new work at Stux Gallery in New York is delicate and very beautiful, but still gross! Those delicate looking flowers are actually dead animal parts.Continue Reading

Top 200 20th Century Artists?

The Times and Saatchi gallery have compiled 1,461,523 votes from the public to come up with a list of the 200 top artists of the 20th Century. It’s a method that has flaws as some artists will be missing and other artists will get more attention than they really deserve, but any list compiled by anyone is flawed as lists are an art rather than a science. They’re not meant to be taken too seriously.

1 Pablo Picasso 21587

2 Paul Cezanne 21098

3 Gustav Klimt 20823

4 Claude Monet 20684

5 Marcel Duchamp 20647

6 Henri Matisse 17096

7 Jackson Pollock 17051

8 Andy Warhol 17047

9 Willem De Kooning 17042

10 Piet Mondrian 17028Continue Reading

Pig Skin Portraits by Heide Hatry

I knew there was something strange about these portraits when I first looked at them but I just couldn’t figure out what it was. I thought the eyes had a realness about them that is hard to create, which turned out to be partly correct.

The artist Heide Hatry created these weird little creations with animal skin and body parts. So the eyes are real, but they’re real pigs eyes. The lips are raw flesh and the skin is from a pig.Continue Reading

Jesus Christ in Art + Controversy

One of the easiest ways for an artist to get a little media love is to make fun of a religion. People usually take their religion a little too seriously, so it’s a proven method to create some controversy and to get your brand out there. It’s probably better to pick on religions like christianity, buddhism or maybe even judaism though as you may have to go in to protective custody if you go picking on islam (they really take their religion seriously).

I have been noticing Jesus Christ popping up quite a bit lately..Continue Reading

Tobias Meyer – Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Auction

Here’s an interesting link to a video of Tobias Meyer of Sotheby’s talking about some important works from their upcoming contemporary art auction on Wednesday. He talks about a large triptych by Francis Bacon which is expected to sell for a figure with lots of zeros on the end of it. You can also browse the catalogue online (I think you still have to register to view them, but it’s free).Continue Reading
