Philip Guston at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt

philip guston painting

A selection of late works by Philip Guston will be showing at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt gallery in Germany. The Canadian born American painter would have been celebrating his 100th birthday this year. The exhibition has borrowed paintings from the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.

I love paintings that can’t be mistaken for anything other than a painting. Guston made paintings about paint, whether they were abstract or figurative, he wasn’t trying to hide the paint.

With some of the exhibitions I mention on Art News Blog it can be difficult choosing 5 really good works to share. That wasn’t a problem with this exhibition as it was difficult NOT sharing some of the works. I just wish Germany wasn’t so far from Australia ;-)
