Quotes about Art

The Internet isn’t working very well for me today, so I didn’t bother looking for any news of interest. I found some good quotes instead.

  • Above all, it is a matter of loving art, not understanding it.
    Fernand Leger
  • There’s no retirement for an artist, it’s your way of living so there’s no end to it.
    Henry Moore
  • Painting is a language which cannot be replaced by another language. I don’t know what to say about what I paint, really.
    Balthus
  • A sincere artist is not one who makes a faithful attempt to put on to canvas what is in front of him, but one who tries to create something which is, in itself, a living thing.
    William Dobell
  • O great creator of being grant us one more hour to perform our art and perfect our lives.
    Jim Morrison
  • I just wanted to find out where the boundaries were. I’ve found out there aren’t any. I wanted to be stopped but no one will stop me.
    Damien Hirst
  • The method of painting is the natural growth out of a need. I want to express my feelings rather than illustrate them.
    Jackson Pollock
  • It’s not a matter of painting life, it’s a matter of giving life to painting.
    Pierre Bonnard

Feel free to add more quotes in the comments. I have collected quotes since I started reading books and never get tired of them. I rarely read a book twice, but I always read through the quotes that I collect.

  1. Here’s..well it’s more of an excerpt really, of an interview with Maurizio Cattelan who sent someone on his behalf to answer the questions:

“BBC Four: Cattelan’s work often seems to operate on the level of a joke – the sculpture of a granny in a fridge or the squirrel which committed suicide. How seriously should we take him?

Ben Lewis: Incredibly seriously. As seriously as we take Steve Bell as a cartoonist. As seriously as we take Woody Allen as a director.”

  3. Jafa, I was looking at these links too, so if you wanted to see more of Maurizio:

This is one of the more recent web references I saw on Cattelan where an actor dressed as Picasso to greet visitors to MOMA:

Im surprised art museums havent used Disney sized mascots of artists to attract kids.. or at least distract the kids while their parents look at the art on the walls.

    Bertold Brecht

    for example,

“If you seek just a little truth, as most, you should not ignore abstract forms, the basis from which all short-lived experiences we call reality springs”

  10. I belong to a group of collaborative artists in Texas, http://canvasbycanvas.com and we have just started blogs and I found this site. A great selection of artists quotes can be found at http://quote.robertgenn.com and one I like is from Georges Braque is “With age, art and life become one”..because I’m a senior citizen who loves art.
