“The Battle of Anghiari” is said to be the masterpiece of all time, but the problem is that nobody knows where it is. Maurizio Seracini believes he may be on the verge of uncovering the lost masterpiece behind a wall at Florence’s Renaissance town hall in Italy.

“For art historians, finding Leonardo’s lost Battle of Anghiari is in the same league as finding the Titanic or the still lost tomb of the Ancient Egyptian architect Imhotep — as big as you can get.” TimseOnline

“Now that the Italian government has given him the go-ahead to complete his investigation, Seracini says he is just a few months away from finding out once and for all. If he is right, there is no overestimating the importance such a discovery would have.” YahooNews

  1. My memory may be faulty, but wasn’t the finding of the Titanic of some interest for a moment or two but quickly disappeared into the dust bin of history (as the saying goes).
No doubt a-new-Leonardo would stimulate the production of many books by serious art historians, popularizers and novelists (The True Real No Kidding Da Vinci Code Contained in the Long Lost Painting Hidden as Part of a Papal Conspiracy).

But history and art are very different things-

History is to be learnt from, art is to be admired. People don’t remember the finding of the Titanic, because the sinking itself is left more prominent in the mind. People do not remember the creation of the art or contemplate the emotions and stages of thought that the artist must have gone through but they do remember the image of the painting.

How many people do you know who do not recognize the image of the mona lisa?

Perhaps “paypal” conspiracy is actually what we will face if the mural is recovered. Expect tons of reproductions and “relic” offers on Ebay.
